SGOT (AST): Normal Range and What a High Result Means
SGOT — also written AST (aspartate aminotransferase) — is an enzyme found in the liver, but also in heart and skeletal muscle. That is the key to reading it: unlike SGPT, a raised SGOT is not automatically about the liver, which is why the two are almost always reported together.
Normal SGOT (AST) range
What a high SGOT (AST) means
A raised SGOT means cells containing the enzyme have released it. The company it keeps decides what that suggests: raised alongside SGPT usually points at the liver, while SGOT raised on its own may reflect muscle rather than liver at all — including after unaccustomed heavy exercise.
Common causes:
- Fatty liver
- Alcohol
- Viral hepatitis
- Certain medicines and supplements
- Recent intense or unaccustomed exercise
- Muscle injury
What a low SGOT (AST) means
A low SGOT is not considered a health concern and rarely needs any action.
Food & lifestyle that help
Favour
- Vegetables, fruit and whole grains
- Dal, legumes and other lean protein
- Plenty of water
Limit
- Alcohol
- Fried and very oily food
- Sugar and refined carbs (maida)
- Supplements you have not discussed with a doctor
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if SGOT is well above the upper limit, is rising across reports, or comes with yellowing of the eyes, dark urine, abdominal pain or unusual tiredness. Mention any recent heavy exercise, new medicine or supplement — it changes how the result is read.

What is the difference between SGOT and SGPT?
SGPT (ALT) sits mainly in the liver, so it is the more liver-specific of the two. SGOT (AST) is also present in heart and skeletal muscle, so it can rise for reasons that have nothing to do with the liver. Doctors read the pair together, and their ratio can itself be informative.
Can exercise raise SGOT?
Yes. Unaccustomed or intense exercise can release the enzyme from muscle and lift SGOT for a few days, with a normal liver. If you trained hard before the test, tell the doctor reading it.
What SGOT level is dangerous?
There is no single number. A mild rise is common and often reversible; levels many times the upper limit, a rising trend, or a rise with symptoms need prompt medical review rather than a wait-and-see.
