Low HDL Cholesterol: What It Means and How to Raise It
HDL — high-density lipoprotein — is the one number in a lipid profile where higher is generally better. It carries cholesterol away from the artery walls and back to the liver. A low HDL alongside high triglycerides is a common pattern on Indian reports, and the two usually move together.
Normal HDL Cholesterol range
What a high HDL Cholesterol means
A high HDL has long been read as favourable, and for most people a value above 60 mg/dL is reported as protective. Very high levels are occasionally inherited and do not carry the same benefit, so an unusually high figure is worth a doctor's read rather than an assumption.
Common causes:
- Regular aerobic activity
- Moderate weight and a low waist measurement
- An inherited pattern, in a minority of people
What a low HDL Cholesterol means
A low HDL is common on Indian lipid profiles and frequently travels with a high triglyceride level, a wide waist and insulin resistance. It responds less to what you cut out and more to what you do — activity and weight change move it where dietary fat alone tends not to.
- Physical inactivity
- Excess weight, particularly around the abdomen
- A diet heavy in refined carbohydrates — white rice, maida, sugar
- Smoking
- Poorly controlled diabetes
Food & lifestyle that help
Favour
- Nuts, seeds and other sources of unsaturated fat
- Fatty fish where you eat it
- Mustard, groundnut, rice bran or olive oil
- Whole grains and millets in place of polished rice
Limit
- Sugar, sweets and sweetened drinks
- White rice, maida and bakery items in quantity
- Vanaspati and trans fats
- Smoking, which lowers HDL directly
When to see a doctor
Bring a low HDL to a doctor as part of the whole lipid profile rather than on its own — it means most when read next to your triglycerides, your LDL and your waist measurement. Raise it sooner if you have diabetes or a family history of early heart disease.

What raises HDL most reliably?
Regular aerobic activity and losing excess weight around the middle, together with stopping smoking. These do more for HDL than any change in dietary fat, which is why the advice here is about movement rather than about what to eat.
Is a low HDL dangerous if my LDL is normal?
It still counts. A low HDL with high triglycerides is a recognised pattern that a doctor weighs alongside your waist, your blood sugar and your blood pressure — a normal LDL does not cancel it out.
