Ferritin: What Low Ferritin Means for Your Iron Stores
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, and measuring it is the closest thing to reading the body's iron reserve. It matters because stores run down long before hemoglobin does — so ferritin can be low while a blood count still looks normal.
Normal Serum Ferritin range
What a high Serum Ferritin means
Ferritin also rises with inflammation, which makes a high result harder to interpret than a low one: it may mean genuinely high iron stores, or simply that something inflammatory is going on. A doctor will usually look at CRP and other iron studies before concluding anything.
Common causes:
- Inflammation or infection
- Liver conditions
- Regular heavy alcohol use
- Iron overload, including inherited forms
What a low Serum Ferritin means
A low ferritin means iron stores are depleted — the earliest stage of iron deficiency, often before anemia appears. Tiredness, breathlessness on stairs, hair fall and poor concentration are common with it. The cause matters as much as the number, because ongoing blood loss needs finding rather than simply replacing the iron.
Food & lifestyle that help
Favour
- Iron-rich foods: dal, rajma, chana, green leafy vegetables, jaggery
- Meat, fish or egg where eaten
- Vitamin C alongside iron-rich meals — lemon, amla, guava, tomato
- Cooking in an iron kadhai
Limit
- Tea and coffee with meals, which reduce iron absorption
- Calcium supplements taken at the same time as iron
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if ferritin is low, if it is high without an obvious explanation, or if you have heavy periods, black stools or unexplained weight loss alongside it. Iron supplements are worth taking only on medical advice — the dose, the form and the search for a cause all matter, and unnecessary iron is not harmless.

Can ferritin be low when hemoglobin is normal?
Yes, and it often is. Stores empty first and hemoglobin falls later, so a normal blood count does not rule out iron deficiency. This is why ferritin is worth testing when someone is tired without an obvious reason.
What causes low ferritin?
Low intake, poor absorption, and blood loss — commonly heavy periods, and in some cases bleeding in the digestive tract. Finding the reason matters as much as correcting the number.
Does a high ferritin mean too much iron?
Not always. Ferritin rises with inflammation as well as with iron overload, so a high result is usually rechecked with other iron studies and an inflammation marker before it means anything definite.
