How to Read a Blood Test Report

A lab report is designed for a doctor, not for you. That is why it looks dense — but the structure is simple once you see it, and the same four columns appear on almost every report printed in India.

Whatever the lab, a result line usually carries the same four things:

Some reports add a flag — H, L, or an arrow — when a value sits outside the range. Treat that flag as a prompt to look closer, not as a verdict.

Why the reference range on your report is the one that counts

Reference ranges are not universal. They depend on the equipment the lab uses, the method, and the population the lab calibrated against. Two labs can both be correct and still print different ranges for the same test.

This is why comparing your number against a range you found online is unreliable. Always compare against the range printed on your report, next to your result.

It also means a value sitting a fraction outside the range is rarely dramatic. Ranges are built so that a proportion of perfectly healthy people fall outside them.

Read patterns, not single numbers

A single result in isolation says very little. Doctors read groups of results together, because it is the pattern that carries meaning.

A liver panel is read as a set. So is a lipid profile, and so is a blood count. One raised value inside an otherwise normal panel usually means something quite different from several moving in the same direction.

Why is my value flagged high when the doctor says it's fine?

Reference ranges are statistical, not diagnostic. A small number of healthy people fall outside them, and a marginal flag on a single test inside an otherwise normal panel is often clinically unimportant. Your doctor is reading the whole picture, including your history.

Can I compare results between two different labs?

Compare cautiously. Different labs use different methods and units, so the same sample can produce different numbers and different ranges. If you are tracking a value over time, using the same lab makes the comparison more meaningful.

Do I need to fast before every blood test?

No — it depends on the test. Fasting blood sugar and lipid profiles are commonly done fasting, while many others are not. The lab or the doctor ordering the test will tell you what is required for yours.
